Bl. Maria Gabriella Sagheddu was a Trappist nun in Italy. She was extremely devoted to Christian unity and often offered herself for that cause. She died of tuberculosis. Pope St. John Paul II beatified her in 1983, citing her desire for and devotion to Christian unity.
Maria Gabriella trusted that God would bring his flock together and knew that she had to be part of the solution. She did many works for Christian unity in addition to her prayer for it. In this way, she’s a great example of walking the walk and talking the talk.
What is really cool about her life is that God would show up for her through the Scriptures. At several pivotal points in her life, Maria Gabriella would hear readings specific to Christian unity. She knew she was doing the right thing and was on the right path. God has given me scriptures to comfort me and this reminds me that the Scriptures are a living, breathing entity, meant for all times and all people. Maria Gabriella knew this intimately and never wavered in this belief.
Bl. Maria Gabriella Sagheddu, pray for us!
