Adelaide/Aleydis/Alice (she’s listed as three separate saints under each of these names, although the story remains exactly the same) was sent to live at a convent when she was only seven years old. I don’t know why. This seems cruel to me but maybe there were extenuating circumstances. The nuns loved her greatly though, and Adelaide was especially humble and holy.
When she was still young, Alice contracted leprosy and have to be isolated. The disease and this shunning caused her great pain and sorrow. Her only consolation was the Eucharist and she received, under one species, as often as he could. Alice also received many visions and ecstasies. Eventually, Adelaide was paralyzed from the disease and went blind. She died from leprosy.
Adelaide knew suffering from a young age. When she was sent to the convent (for whatever reason), when she contracted leprosy, when the convent had to abandon her. Alice must have felt much like Jesus being abandoned by the apostles in his greatest hour of need. But Aleydis didn’t let that strip her of her faith, although it certainly could’ve and no one would’ve blamed her. While her body was weak, Alice’s spirit was strong. She never wavered and grew closer to Jesus with every passing moment. She was totally in love with him and not only didn’t let anything get in the way of that, but she also used everything she had to get closer to Him.
St. Adelaide/Aleydis/Alice, pray for us!
