Melangell, meaning “little nun”, was a Welsh hermit and abbess in the 7th or 8th century. Legend states that she was an Irish princess who fled an arranged marriage. She then became a consecrated virgin. Apparently, she supernaturally protected a hare from a prince’s hunting dogs and was thus granted land for a convent. Melangell is the patron saint of hares, now.
What we see over and over again in the lives of the saints is people giving up lives of power to live lives of humility and often in humble places. Or using their power to lift up the lowly in their areas. This is what Christ is about, what the cross is about. Melangell shows us the beauty of a life lived in humility, not worrying about temporal power, but the power of the Kingdom of God.
St. Melangell, pray for us!
